Why Jude Bellingham avoided Euro 2024 ban but  Merih Demiral was punished by UEFA amid goal celebration

UEFA make decision on ban for Merih Demiral and Jude Bellingham, but the Turkey defender has been handed a much harsher penalty.

Both players were charged for making indecent gestures during their round of 16 games, with Bellingham committing an offence against Slovakia and Demiral versus Austria.

These are the decisions following the celebrations of Demiral and Bellingham, UEFA statement confirmed.

The England midfielder seemed to grab his crotch while looking at the Slovakian bench after scoring an equaliser deep into stoppage time.

He has been handed one-game ban for his balls gesture but suspension is valid for a year, Bellingham will be able to play against Switzerland. He’s also been fined for €30k as Jude will serve a one game suspension within one year period of decision.

Meanwhile, Demiral’s wolf gesture appeared to be the symbol of a far-right ultra-nationalist ‘Grey Wolves’ group. The group is banned in France, and the wolf gesture is similarly frowned upon in Austria who were Turkey’s opponents when he made the symbol.
Merih Demiral has been banned for two games and meaning he will miss Turkey’s clash with the Netherlands and a potential semi-final, UEFA confirms.

The Turkish Federation has already appealed to CAS

Demiral was found guilty of four rule breaches that include:

  • General principles of conduct
  • Violating the basic rules of decent conduct
  • Using a sporting event for manifestations of a non-sporting nature
  • Bringing the sport of football into disrepute
